Why Mold Grows on Clothes

If you have clothes that are wet for more than 24 hours then mold can easily start to grow on them.

The most common reason mold grows on clothes is if you wash them and then leave them wet for a long time. After you wash your clothes you should dry them immediately. Drying clothes on the line in the sun is the best. And only put your clothes away once they are completely dry.

The same is true for clothes that are damp after you wear them. These need to be washed quickly (the same day) or hung somewhere to air out. Make sure not to leave damp clothes in a wet pile or the hamper for days on end.

The other main reason that clothes grow mold on them is if the air in your home is too humid. Rooms where you store clothes need to be properly ventilated. Hanging clothes with some space between them in the closet or not packing them in too tightly together in drawers help the clothes air out when they are stored away.

Mold Destroys Clothes

Mold on clothes can be a common problem in the home. If you find mold on your clothes it's important to remove it quickly. The longer mold is left on clothes the harder it will be to remove.

Mold slowly eats the organic material it's growing on, such as cotton clothes. The longer you wait to remove mold from your clothes the more deteriorated they will become. Moldy clothes begin to smell bad too.

Symptoms from Mold on Clothes

Another good reason to quickly remove mold from clothes is the symptoms it causes. Breathing in mold spores from clothes can cause allergic reactions like sore eyes and sneezing. You can also get skin rashes and itchiness from wearing clothes with mold on them.

You do not have to be wearing moldy clothes to suffer symptoms from them though. If there's mold on your clothes they'll release spores into the air of your home. These spores build up inside the home and affect the indoor air quality and your health. Chances are that this will make the mold problem spread from your clothes and mold will begin to grow around your home.
